On the trip from Hangzhou to Shanghai, we stopped for an hour in the late afternoon at the river village of Wuzhen.

Its beautifully crafted buildings are original, dating from the 1700s. The village stretches along both sides of a canal. People still live here, and there are a number of excellent workshops and museums to visit.
